How to verify if a job posting is real or fake

The first question to ask is simple: does this opening exist anywhere official? If a role is posted on a job board, LinkedIn, Telegram channel, or WhatsApp group, try to find the same role on the company careers page or on a verified company social profile. When the title, location, and requirements roughly match, the listing becomes much more believable.

Sometimes smaller companies do not maintain a perfect careers page, so the listing may only appear on a hiring platform. In that case, visit the company website anyway. Check whether the business has a real product, clear contact details, an about page, leadership information, and a domain email pattern that matches the recruiter who contacted you.

A legitimate recruiter does not need to hide behind a vague identity. If someone reaches out by email or message, look at their email domain, LinkedIn presence, and role within the company. A recruiter using a free personal email for a large company should trigger caution immediately. That does not always mean fraud, but it means you should slow down and verify before proceeding.

You can also cross-check whether that recruiter appears on the company team page, LinkedIn employee list, or older public posts. If the recruiter profile was created recently, has almost no activity, or contains inconsistent company details, treat that as a warning sign. Real hiring teams usually leave a clearer public trail over time.

The biggest red flag is a request for money. Employers do not ask candidates to pay for interviews, laptop release, training deposits, or guaranteed placement. Some scams use professional language and claim the payment is refundable after joining, but that is still a scam pattern. A genuine company may ask you to travel, but it will not pressure you into depositing money first.

The tone of the process also matters. If you receive an offer without any real evaluation, if the salary is unrealistically high for your profile, or if the recruiter is pushing you to decide within a few hours, the goal is usually to stop you from thinking carefully. Urgency is one of the oldest fraud tactics in hiring.

Your resume is usually safe to share with trusted employers, but some documents should not be sent too early. Aadhaar copies, PAN details, bank details, full address proof, and educational certificates should be shared only when the company and role have been reasonably verified and there is a valid process moving forward. Oversharing too early increases identity theft risk.

It is also smart to keep a record of where you applied. Save the job link, recruiter name, date, and email thread. If something starts feeling suspicious later, you can re-check the trail calmly. Good recordkeeping makes you less likely to be manipulated by changing claims or disappearing contacts.
